Volunteer Leadership Weekend
The SONH Volunteer Leadership Weekend (VLW) is traditionally offered in December, the VLW offers Sport-Specific training schools which give coaches the opportunity to become a certified in multiple sports in one weekend. We also offer our Rookie School training,  and other training that may include: first aid classes, fundraising classes, and new Local Program training.

See the description of each course below.

Sports-Specific Training Schools

SONH currently provides the opportunity for all coaches to become certified in the sports that they coach. The training schools include sample practice and training schedules, drills and sport specific information, SONH event information and other valuable resources to. Sports-specific courses are very hands-on so coaches need to come prepared.

Rookie School
This course covers the general principles of coaching as well as coaching Special Olympics athletes. Some of the topics covered in this course include: athlete considerations, your coaching style, training as well as preparing for competition. Every volunteer, family member and professional who works with or coaches Special Olympics athletes can benefit from this course.

First Aid
This course gives a broad range of first aid information that is crucial for our volunteers to know when working with athletes participating in out different events. A topic such as avoiding frost bite, proper hydration, and recognizing signs of medical emergencies help give our volunteers an introduction to the world of first aid and better prepares them for dealing with emergency situations.

Fundraising Class
The fundraising class that we offer gives our Local Program Volunteers up to date information about all state fundraisers planned for that year, and how they can get involved and raise money for their Local Program. It also serves as a tool for Local Program Coordinators to share fundraising ideas and brain storm new ways to get people involved and to raise funds.

New Local Program Training
New Local Program training gives our new Local Program Coordinators a chance to learn all the ins and outs of SONH. They are introduced to the Local Coordinators Manual, which provides them with all paperwork, event dates, and all other information that is crucial to running a Local Program. Through this course they gain an understanding and a familiarity of SONH, which is a crucial first step in joining the organization.
